"One of the apparent paradoxes of flow is that there is a feeling of effortlessness whilst doing something that requires great effort. It’s a hard concept to talk about in climbing because the capacity to try hard is a kind of super power. I’m pretty good at this try hard thing. But really, trying hard isn’t the super power, it’s trying just the right amount, with no effort wasted.

Sometimes it feels like passing through the eye of a needle. You have to go with only that which is necessary. Let go of everything: all extra tension in the body and empty the mind. You have to leave voice of judgment, voice of doubt even the voice of direction on the ground and climb with abandon, without any restraints.

If you can harness that, it doesn’t matter how much or little you train, what your build is, whether people tell you you can or can’t do it. If you can climb like that then you’ll go places with climbing. Climbing will be one of the most valuable things you can do."
